Unfair sales practices hit profits

More than half of UK small businesses believe that profits are being hit by unfair sales tactics, according to the Department of Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform.

Rogue sales jobs employees are said to be costing more than one third of businesses between ten and 20 per cent of their revenue, research has revealed.

Consumer affairs minister Gareth Thomas suggested that while many employees recruited through sales recruitment agencies understood the importance of treating customers fairly, many still use unfair sales jobs practices.

He said: "Honest traders understand the value of treating customers fairly and they've had enough of losing profit to rivals using underhand tactics to get ahead.

"The Consumer Protection Regulations will deliver better protection for consumers, cut red tape and put in place a simpler and clearer consumer law that will be easier to interpret and enforce."

Research also suggested that 12 per cent of business leaders surveyed had worked in sales jobs where "questionable" sales jobs practices were either encouraged or part of training.
