Diverse recruitment helps reach 'untapped markets'

Focusing on diversity in sales recruitment can help reach untapped markets, according to a new report from the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) and the Trades Union Congress (TUC).

Indiscriminate recruitment of staff for positions based on their skills rather than race, age or sex can be beneficial because it can offer insight and reach into untapped markets.

According to director-general of the CBI, employers tend to notice "huge benefits" when they recruit a more diverse workforce in roles such as sales jobs.

He explained: "Whether it is hiring skilled staff, understanding their customers' needs better or more fundamentally through improved morale and productivity.

"It does not have to be hard work or legally complex either - simply making the effort to work out your precise needs, reaching out as widely as you can then hiring, training or promoting the best person on merit."

The report also suggests that diversification in recruitment can help improve staff retention rates and save employers money in the long-term.
