Companies 'happy to hear pay requests'

Employers believe it is OK for job applicants to discuss compensation during interviews, it has been revealed.

Research carried out by staffing service Accountemps found 56 per cent of senior executives claim they are comfortable with applicants broaching the subject in the first or second interview.

Chairman of the group Max Messmer commented: "While employers and job applicants don't have to agree on a final figure right away, general salary requirements should be discussed early in the hiring process to avoid surprises later on."

He went on to say that when they ask about a salary for the first time, jobseekers should be prepared to hear a range of suggestions as employers will want to get a sense of their qualifications and fit for the position before making a formal offer.

This week, Louise Kursmark, co-author of job hunt advice book 15-Minute Cover Letter, claimed that cover letters are vital when making an employment application as they are a formal introduction to people who can be influential in a job search.
