Firms 'should not need to let staff go'

Companies that are only able to survive by removing staff should not be in business, according to the Institute of Employment Rights.

Director of the group Carolyn Jones said it is also not surprising companies are beginning to look at factors such as age and relationship status when recruiting women but argued that this is unfair.

She added: "This is like looking for a quick cure and I wonder if they ask people if they've been involved in the banking industry or if they've ruined an economy recently when they are recruiting."

Ms Jones went on to say that problems of the UK economy have not been brought about specifically by young people and commented that a business only able to survive by removing staff should not be in existence in the first place.

Studies by recruitment scoring website HireScores.com found 81 per cent of British business managers would ask female job applicants if they were pregnant, planned on having children or already had them if they could.
