Expert: Retirement age should be scrapped

There could be more people working in sales jobs beyond the current retirement age in the coming years, according to an industry expert.

Dr Ros Altmann, a pensions expert, said that she fully supports proposals made by Labour deputy leader Harriet Harman in the Daily Mail recently, which advised that workers would no longer be forced to retire from their sales jobs at 65.

"It is something I have been calling for [over] the last few years. Basically, we need to encourage and facilitate people working longer. We are wasting so much of our precious national resource by forcing people to retire before they might be ready," added Ms Altmann.

The expert also commented that the regulations are "long overdue", stating that while no one should be forced to continue, it was not right that employers could just get rid of a worker because of their age.

However, she did say that if people were not fit to remain in their sales jobs then that was a different scenario altogether.
