Part-time sales jobs 'may alleviate effect of recession'

People should take up part-time sales jobs as it bridges the gap between flexible working and not working at all, according to an industry expert.

John Philpott, chief economic advisor for the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, said that getting people into part-time jobs could alleviate the full impact of the recession as it gives them some income to live off.

He added that people who are currently underemployed, or those who are wanting to work more hours than are available or stated in their contract, should try their best to engage with many of the temporary jobs that the government is trying to create.

"However, clearly if they are having to stay in part-time jobs year after year, then that wouldn't necessarily be a good thing if their living standards dropped," he added.

Mr Philpott's comments came as the Office for National Statistics revealed that the number of people who are unemployed currently stands at 2.8 million.
