Marc Bolland must continue his success at M&S

One of the UK's most successful chief executives needs to recreate the success he had at the revitalised supermarket Morrisons if he is to make Marks and Spencers (M&S) attractive to younger shoppers.

Marc Bolland turned Morrisons into a major force in the UK's retail market while working as chief executive and experts say he must show a similar magic touch with the iconic high street brand if it is to compete with Tesco and Sainsbury's.

"The world has passed M&S by over the past two to three decades. It was a world leader in highly innovative, chilled, prepared food but Tesco, Sainsbury's and Waitrose have eroded its advantage and become more proficient," Clive Black, an analyst at Shore Capital, told the Independent.

The sales jobs industry will watch on with interest to see how Mr Bolland fares and whether he can emulate his success at the retailer in the coming months, with the newspaper reporting that he has been visiting M&S stores around the UK.

According to CBI's latest Distributive Trades Survey, 46 per cent of retailers reported sales volumes in early April which were higher than during the same time last year.
