Immigration restrictions need business consultation

The new coalition government's decision to put a cap on immigration should involve the business community and companies using sales recruitment, in order to fill important vacancies which might be affected, according to an expert.

Mark Swift, media relations manager for EEF - the manufacturers' organisation, said that the government needs to consider the skill set which could be lost if a stringent and draconian cap is placed on immigration.

"Our response would be that it does have to be done in consultation with business so that it does allow for the right amount of flexibility," he stated.

The expert added that by following the EEF's advice, businesses which require certain kinds of high level critical skills will be able to get them if they are required.

John Cridland, the CBI's deputy director-general, recently said that any changes to immigration policies need to ensure that companies using sales recruitment are able to get the expertise they need from abroad if required.
